Recruitment and Selection Information for Managers

On these pages you will find all you need to know about how to recruit a new or replacement member of staff.  The Recruitment and Selection process is set out in 6 stages. The stages can be followed using the Recruitment Stages and the Recruitment Checklist documents, and then for full details you will need to refer to the Recruitment and Selection Code of Practice.  If you can't find what you need, please get in touch with Alexa Copley or Claire Brown or your HR contact

Here is a brief overview of the recruitment and selection process:

  • School/Directorate identify the resource need and complete an RSA1 and a Business Case
  • School/Directorate prepare a job description, post specification, any supplementary information and a draft advert
  • School/Directorate send all the above to HR for the post to be graded
  • School/Directorate consider any selection exercises for the interview and whether pre-employment checks are required
  • HR advertise all posts on the Redeployment Bulletin in the first instance
  • HR then advertise all posts not filled through Redeployment internally and/or externally
  • HR process all applications and send to School/Directorate
  • Schools/Directorates draw up the shortlist
  • Schools/Directorates make arrangements for the interview and write to candidates
  • The chair of the interview panel makes a verbal offer to the successful candidate
  • HR send formal written confirmation to the successful candidate
  • HR write to all unsuccessful candidates
