IT Services

IT Services ensures a customer-focused approach and uses the latest in technologies to deliver the services you need to study, work, and undertake research wherever you happen to be, on or off campus.

Note: Once you've activated your IT account you can learn more about how to use the services available by visiting our information for current students and staff on the IT Services intranet site.

Computers and laptops

Whether you want to work on your assignment, catch up on your email, or just want to do some general studying, we have almost 400 computers spread across various 'cluster' rooms around our campus. Many of these rooms are open 24/7 throughout the year, except for some public holidays.

Office 365 is available, and we work with lecturers to ensure the right specialist software needed for your studies is also available - all within our Horizon service which means you can also access this software virtually from your own device, wherever you are.

If you prefer to be out and about, rather than sit in a cluster room, we also have a laptop loans service you can take advantage of.

WiFi

If you are a visitor to the campus, you can use our eduroam Visitor Access WiFi service. Please ask for access at the main Reception in the Richmond Building, or at the Library Welcome Desk in the J. B. Priestley Library.

Once you become a current student or member of staff, and you've activated your IT account, you can sign in and connect to our 'eduroam' WiFi service.

Study and work seamlessly, on and off campus

The University offers a blended approach to learning and teaching, and our digital services help you to study and work no matter where you are. These include:

  • A remote cluster desktop service – even if you're not on campus, you can still access a University computer using our 'cluster on demand' service from your own computer, wherever you are.
  • Canvas – the virtual learning environment where you access your course materials, submit your assignments, and attend any online lectures. A Canvas app is also available.
  • University Portal – your personalised digital dashboard where you can view your timetable for the week ahead, read University news and see upcoming events, view your Library record, find out who your student reps are, book a study room, see availability of loan laptops, access your University email, calendar and files you’ve stored on OneDrive, search the University intranet, and more. An Android app is also available (an app for Apple devices is coming soon).
  • Microsoft 365 apps – this useful suite of services includes:
    • Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint - you can also install the latest version of Office for free on up to five personal devices.
    • OneDrive – save your files to the cloud, and access them from any device, wherever you are.
    • OneNote – digital notebook.
    • Microsoft Forms – quickly and easily create surveys and quizzes.
    • Microsoft Teams – collaborate and communicate with fellow students and colleagues.
  • Specialist software - some software, in addition to Microsoft Office above, is available to download on personal devices. This includes EndNote, Matlab, Minitab, NVivo and SPSS.

Connect, communicate and collaborate

As well as email, you'll have access to Microsoft Teams to help you connect, communicate and collaborate with others - whether this is via an instant message, a one-to-one or group call, a virtual meeting, or an online lecture.

IT help and support

If you need IT help or have an IT-related question you'll be able to come along to our IT Bar (walk-up support service).

And, of course, you can always log a ticket with our Servicedesk and keep track of its progress through to resolution.
