Inter-Library Loans

What is Inter-Library Loans?

The Inter-Library loans service aims to obtain items, which are not held in any of the Bradford University libraries and are required to support your studies or research.

Who can use Inter-Library Loans?

This service is available to academic staff, postgraduate students and undergraduate students. It is a very expensive service to support. If you do not fit into any of these categories please contact Interlibrary Loans before submitting requests to check if you are eligible.

How do I contact Inter-Library Loans ?

Inter-Library Loans staff are based in J. B. Priestley Library.

Telephone number: 01274-233369, Fax number: 01274-233615, Email address: interloans@bradford.ac.uk.

How much does it cost?

Borrower Category Price per item
Students £2.00
Academic Staff £4.00

NB! There are also charges for overdue returns, some renewals and non-collected items.

Are there copyright restrictions on what I can request?

Yes, there are copyright restrictions. If your request is for a photocopy you must abide by Copyright legislation. Firstly all photocopies must be for private study and research ONLY and not for commercial use. If you require a photocopy which is to be used for commercial purposes then you must say so at the time of request as this requires us to obtain a copyright cleared copy for you. Extra charges will then apply. Even if requesting for private research and study there are still limitations as to what you are allowed to photocopy for yourself, or request as photocopies from Inter-Library Loans. These restrictions ensure that private research and study is enabled, however the intellectual property rights of the copyright owner is not infringed. The proportion of a book, journal, conference proceeding etc. that may be photocopied is restricted to whichever is the greater of:

  1. Up to 5% or one chapter of a book
  2. Up to 5% or one article of a journal issue
  3. Up to 5% or one paper of one set of conference proceedings
  4. Up to 5% or one case of one report of judicial proceedings
  5. Up to 5% of an anthology of short stories or poems or one short story or one poem of not more than 10 pages
Also, you must ensure that you do not request a copy of the SAME paper on more than one occasion. You must not supply the photocopy to any other person. You also must not request the same material, at the same time, for the same purpose as a colleague or another person who you are working with.

These restrictions are all part of Copyright Law and must be adhered to.

How do I request something?

Before submitting requests check the library catalogue and ensure that the item is not in stock, either in print or electronically, at any of the University libraries (items found to be in stock will not be processed and refunds for the payment made will not be given.)

  1. You can obtain an ILL request form from either of the library counters or you can print a copy from the Inter-Library loans web page, complete the form by hand then submit it at any of the library counters with payment. Requests will not be processed without payment made. Use One form per item.
  2. Set up an Online Request Service account

How will my item be supplied?

From the 1st September 2011 all articles/chapters will be supplied electronically directly to your Bradford e-mail address, wherever possible. This is the quickest delivery method available.

Items will be sent to your Bradford e-mail address directly from the British Library as an attachment. This service is provided by the British Library and is known as Secure Electronic Delivery (SED). Please ensure that you read the relevant document on Secure Electronic Delivery and have successfully opened the test document on the British Library Website before trying to open a supplied document. It is important that you are aware that you only have 14 days to access the paper and you can only access it once. If we are unable to provide documents electronically, they can be sent directly to you, to any address within the UK, or to your department. You will need to select your preferred delivery method when you submit a request. If you prefer a photocopy to be sent to your home address, the details will be taken from e-vision. It is therefore important that you keep the address information on e-vision up-to-date and accurate.

Loans must be collected from the main library counter or Management Library. You can choose your preferred collection point when submitting requests. You will be notified by e-mail to your Bradford e-mail account when an item is available. Please ensure you check your e-mail regularly.

How long does it take?

We can never guarantee a delivery date. We deal with many agencies worldwide so the timescales vary. We will try to process your request as soon as possible.

Please allow at least 2 weeks before enquiring about the progress of your request(s).

What is the Voucher System?

Inter-Library Loans vouchers can be used to pay for requests or to put money onto an Inter-Library Loans account.

Vouchers may be purchased by individuals or departments from the counter in the J. B. Priestley Library or through the Management Library.

Vouchers may be purchased by cash, cheque, credit card or a requisition form from a department.

How do I return items and are fines charged for lateness?

Items should be returned to the library counter at whichever branch you prefer. If the library is closed items can be returned in the book returns box situated in the wall at the side of the J. B. Priestley Library.

Please return all items promptly. Fines are charged for the late return of ILL items. Currently the fine is 50 pence per day to a maximum of £30.00 per item. A grace period of 2 days only is given.

Please note that any additional charges made by the supplying library for the late return of an item will also be passed to you, in particular, the late return of an item from the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) may incur an addition charge currently of £82.50.

If a BLDSC book is permanently lost the replacement cost is £165.00.

If a loaned item is not collected before it is due back to the lender, the full request charge will be payable. Please let us know if there is a reason why you cannot collect an item borrowed for you.
