Papers on Anthrax collected by Dr J.H. Bell and Dr Fritz Eurich

This small collection gives a fascinating insight into a disease that was famously identified with Bradford. Wool was shipped from across the world for sorting and processing in Bradford. Sometimes the materials were infected with anthrax: at the end of the 19th century there was, on average, one case a week of "wool sorters' disease", a third of which were fatal.

The two individuals connected with this collection played important roles in the fight against the disease. In 1879, Dr. John Henry Bell, a Bradford practitioner, confirmed that "wool-sorters' disease" was in fact anthrax. Dr Fritz Eurich set up a practice in Bradford in 1896 and in 1905 was appointed as bacteriologist to the Bradford and District Anthrax Investigation Board. Thanks to his work, several important measures were taken against anthrax, including the building of the Wool Disinfecting Station at Liverpool.
