The Antiquarian Collection

The Antiquarian Collection is a small artificial collection of historic, rare, beautiful or fragile printed books on various subjects. Most date from the hand-press era (pre-1850). The designation also covers reference books for use in Special Collections.

Highlights include:

• The oldest book in Special Collections: a copy of Bacon's essays printed in 1639. It is particularly appropriate that this title is our oldest, for Bacon's ideas are highly relevant to other Special Collections, especially the New Atlantis material.
• Travel books, such as a Journey to Timbuctoo by James Grey Jackson.
• Volumes of Charles Knight's Old England and Penny Magazine, delightful though delicate 19th century periodicals.
