The Bradford Dyers' Association Archive

The Association

The Bradford Dyers' Association Ltd was a combination of Bradford commission dyeing firms. It was founded in 1898, and grew large and successful, dominating the industry in the area. In 1964 the Association was taken over by the Viyella Group.

The Archive

This small collection of papers was gathered by Mr James Ewing (1884-1975). He was Joint Managing Director of The Bradford Dyers' Association Ltd. from 1946-1958 and Chairman from 1946 to his retirement in 1962. His daughter, Mrs R. Willis, presented the papers to the J.B. Priestley Library in 1993.

• Company reports 1916-1962 (incomplete), with cuttings on the Viyella Group 1966-1969.
• Speeches, articles, letters to the press and cuttings 1930-1961 on trade federations, industry regulation, and the structure of the B.D.A.
• Typescript of a paper, "Some aspects of the coal question", given in 1926 to a Bradford discussion group (Mr. Ewing was a director of the Bradford Coal Merchants' and Consumers' Association Ltd.).
• Selected articles on economics from the "Manchester Guardian" 1934-1937.
• "Output, employment and wages in the United Kingdom, 1924, 1930, 1935", by G.L. Schwartz and E.C. Rhodes (Royal Economic Society's memorandum no. 75, 1938).
• Typed excerpts from the "Board of Trade Journal", February 1938, relating to the balance of trade.
