The Papers of Colin Hunter

One of several Commonweal Archives concerning nuclear-free campaigning in Yorkshire in the 1980s.

Colin Hunter

Bradford Councillor Colin Hunter was instrumental in the City’s decision to declare itself a nuclear-free zone in 1981. He also set up, and chaired, the Peace Action Group, which monitored the zone. Further details about the zone and the Action Group can be found on the webpage for its Archive.

Councillor Hunter was also active in Quaker organisations working for peace during the 1980s, particularly the Northern Friends Peace Board and Quaker Peace and Service. He served on the East/West and Peace Committees of the latter.

The Archive

Councillor Hunter donated these papers to Commonweal during the 1990s. They include meeting minutes, correspondence, notes, reports, ephemera, publicity and press cuttings relating to Bradford Peace Action Group, Northern Friends Peace Board, and committees of Quaker Peace and Service. The Archive also contains handwritten notes and related papers of talks given by Councillor Hunter at conferences and meetings, background material on nuclear-free zones, and the United Nations SSD-2, and a small file of peace march photographs, probably intended for use in QPS publications.

The Archive was catalogued as part of the PaxCat Project, with support from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives.
