Textile dyeing was once a major industry in Bradford, with which the University of Bradford had close links. The Dyeing Collection, built up by the University and its predecessors, will interest local historians as well as chemists. It comprises mainly late 19th- and early 20th-century books on the history of the dyeing industry and the technical processes involved. Some of the books are German, reflecting the importance of German dyers in the rapid technological advances made by the industry during this period. The Collection also includes books on traditional domestic dyeing techniques (such as tie-dye and batik) and on vegetable dyeing processes, for example the use of saffron or indigo dyes. Recently, we expanded this collection to include books on Bradford's wool industry, again closely linked with the University.
