The Joel Martin Halpern Balkan Archive

Dr Joel M. Halpern, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, researched and published widely on the cultural anthropology of the Balkan region. He is perhaps best known for his studies of the effects of modernisation on family and everyday life in the Serbian village Orašac, based on material collected by Dr Halpern and his then wife Barbara Kerewsky Halpern, during field work in 1953-4 and subsequent visits.

This Archive consists of copies of Dr Halpern's extensive field notes and digitised versions of photographs taken by Dr Halpern during his research.

Further information about the Archive is available as a collection-level entry on the Library catalogue. Please note that access to the papers and images will require permission from Dr Halpern, which should be obtained by application to Special Collections in the first instance, and that the collection is not yet fully catalogued. For further information, please contact Special Collections.
