The Local and Regional Collection

The collection of printed books about Yorkshire places is one of our most interesting, containing many large, beautiful or old volumes.

The areas covered reflect the University's history, its Bradford, and the interests of our users past and present. We have many Bradford imprints, and other works about the city and its West Riding neighbours, including Leeds and Halifax. The region was characterised by the wool industry and the growth of radical social ideas. We also hold many books about the Yorkshire Dales, which complement the collections donated by Dr Raistrick and Dr Mitchell. Some key authors: Harry Speight, Edmund Bogg, Ralph Thoresby, Thomas Dunham Whitaker, and William Cudworth. Subjects covered include history, travel, legends, antiquities, church architecture, biographies, schools, and co-operatives.
