Run applications on a UNIX machine
Running applications on a Unix machine can be done in two ways:
X-Server allows you to display graphical output from the Unix machine on the PC screen. Unlike X-Sever, Telnet does not allow you to display graphical output from your Unix machine on the local PC screen.
To run applications on the Unix machine muser from our cluster PCs using the X-server, Click on Start - All Programs - Email and Internet Tools - Bradford Unix Service X session. To use this feature over the internet to connect to muser you also need to run another application like PuTTY on your PC.
To run applications on the Unix machine muser from our cluster PCs using Telnet, Click on Start - All Programs - Email and Internet Tools - Bradford Unix Service Telnet session.
Transferring files also can be done in two ways. For this purpose it has two programs Classic FTP and Hummingbird FTP. When you run this FTP program two windows appear, in one of them you will see the contents in your local drives. In the other window you can see the contents from the host to which your PC is connected. Using this ftp, you cannot copy folders. You can only transfer individual files one at a time.
The other program integrates with the Windows explorer which means you can use the Windows Explorer interface to transfer files to and from local drives. With Hummingbird Neighbourhood (pdf) you are not limited to copying files one at a time. You can copy folders as well.
