University members can use any Macintosh, PC (or other operating system), PDA, or Smartphone-based email program to read their Bradford email. The chosen program needs to be capable of connecting to an IMAP email server. The device running the email program needs to have an Internet connection. Any Internet connection from any Internet Service Provider (ISP) can be used to receive and send Bradford email. IMAP is the method by which email messages are delivered from the email servers at Bradford.
Only the email program supplied by Learner Support Services (LSS) will be supported; if you pick another package support will be not available.
When installing or setting up an email program various items will be asked for. The critical items will be something like those listed below:
| Incoming mail server hostname | imap.brad.ac.uk |
|---|---|
| Username or login name | Your University username, all lowercase with no spaces or dots. This is not your email address. |
| Return address or email address: | This is your email address, ending in @bradford.ac.uk |
| Real name or name: | This is your actual real name. It will appear in the From: line of email messages you send. It is important you set this to something sensible or else anti-spam software may prevent your emails being delivered. |
| Outgoing email server hostname or SMTP server | If you are connected to the Bradford network (eg from an office) set this to smtp.brad.ac.uk. If you are using another ISP set this to the SMTP server name that that ISP runs. This will be probably mentioned on the ISP's web site. |
Using an email program of this type can make your computer much more vulnerable to attack from programs arriving via email attachments. Therefore it is mandatory that an up-to-date virus checker and critical operating system patches be installed before you connect to the email service. Anti-virus software is available for free from LSS.
Your attention is drawn to the University's Regulations on the use of computing facilities and the JANET Acceptable Use Policy. In particular, you should be aware of the laws covering computer misuse, libel, the University's policy on harassment, and that network facilities must be used for academic and administrative purposes only.
All services are running as normal, unless stated here.
