Computers, email, usernames and passwords

There are four types of usernames and passwords:

Get more information from your departmental Computer Officer and from our usernames and passwords page.

The supported email software for staff is Outlook. We also have a web-based service called Webmail. User guides are available. Forward any abusive or harassing emails that you receive to abuse@bradford.ac.uk as we can often trace the sender. All matters are investigated and action taken as appropriate. Important: do not open email attachments unless you recognise and trust the source. They can contain viruses which are harmful to PCs.

If you require a laptop for short period, eg, to give a lecture, then you can borrow one from Audio Visual Services.

If you have your own laptop, connect to the network via a cable or wireless connection using RoamNet. Visitors can connect using their own device via the Cloud service. Remember to protect your computer.

Schools and Departments make their own arrangements for local IT support. Your first point of contact is the designated IT support co-ordinator for your area. Your local induction programme should provide relevant details. If you have difficulties determining who provides your IT support, please contact our ICT Service Desk, ext. 3333. The Library and IT Help desk provides general IT help and advice for everyone. You can also attend IT courses, drop-in sessions etc., or contact our training team on ext. 5356 or 3320. We also have an extensive range of documentation/.

Finding and borrowing books

Use the catalogue to check availability. If the item is in stock, find it on the shelves using the class number. If it’s on loan you can reserve it using your library borrower number and PIN. If we don’t have the item in stock, you can use our Inter-Library service for a modest fee. You may also be able to make use of other University libraries through the SCONUL Access Scheme. You can also use the catalogue on your mobile.

Quick Service items (held at J B Priestley Library) and books you’ve requested – you can find these and issue them to yourself in the Self Service Room. Loan periods vary. You can still borrow with fines up to £5.

To renew your books, call our 24-hour renewals service (01274 233342) or login to your record via the catalogue. You can’t renew if you have a fine of £5 or more, or if the book has been reserved. Quick Service Collection items must be renewed at the counter of the library from which they were borrowed.

To return your book, use the self returns machine at the J B Priestley Library or drop books into the chute in the wall outside Student Central. There are book drop bins at the branch libraries. Quick Service Collection items must be returned at the counter of the library from which they were borrowed.
