Touch Typing Skills

Please note: There are many free alternative programmes available on the web which provide touch typing training. Some people may find these easier to use. They would also allow you to learn to touch typing at home and on your own computer.

Accu-Type Keyboard Training System

Accu-Type 4 is a typing tutor consisting of a set of 120 exercises, intended to improve your proficiency in using a keyboard.

How long will it take?

Learning to touch-type depends on each individual and how much time you are prepared to spend practising. The training requires extreme concentration so it is advisable to allocate time slots (eg 30 minutes) for the purpose. Some users may find they reach a reasonable standard on the keyboard letters after approximately 5 hours practice, but you will most likely need at least 12 hours to complete the course.

The main thing is not to rush, but to build up accuracy. It is not a race! The increase in speed will develop later and depends on how much time is spent using the keyboard.

Availability

AccuType 4 is available on all University of Bradford public cluster PCs via: Start - All Programs - Learning Material - General - Accutype Training.

Getting Started

  1. You will need to create a login name (this can be any short name, but it must be one you will easily remember). You will also need to complete a small registration form.
  2. After registration, read the information available in the Introduction window before commencing the training.
  3. To commence the course, click on Exit Introduction, and select Touch-typing Training in the Main menu.

At the end of each exercise you will be given an analysis of your performance and comments to assist with further training.

Finishing a Session

When you wish to end your Accu-Type 4 session, click on Exit (if you have just completed an exercise), otherwise click on File - Exit. Accu-Type keeps a record of your progress, therefore when you next login you can start a new session at the point where your previous session finished.
