Major Changes to IT Services

Changes to email.Student Email – Moving from Webmail to Outlook Live

We are pleased to announce that the new student email service, Outlook Live, is now available. This means you can access extra services via your new account:

I’m a New Student – what do I need to do

You will request your Outlook Live account as part of the enrolment process. If you enrol online, please make sure you complete all the steps, as you will not get email unless you do so.

To login to your email account, click on the 'Email for Students' link under the Quick Links section on the internal home page and login using your Windows Live ID (this is in the format branybo6@student.bradford.ac.uk) and your password (this is the University password that you chose when you enrolled).

If you have forgotten your password, see our password information page or go to the Library and IT Help Desk in the J B Priestley Library.

I’m a Returning Student – what do I need to do

You will request your new Outlook Live email account when you re-enrol. Your email address will no longer be in the format @bradford.ac.uk, but will change to @student.bradford.ac.uk.

Once you have your Outlook Live email account, click on the 'Email for Students' link under the Quick Links section on the internal home page and login to Outlook Live using your Windows Live ID (e.g. branybo6@student.bradford.ac.uk – this is your username with @student.bradford.ac.uk after it; note there are no dots) and your password (this is the University password that you chose).

If you have forgotten your password, see our password information page or go to the Library and IT Help Desk in the J B Priestley Library.

Any new emails sent to your previous University email account (Webmail) will begin to be forwarded to your new Outlook Live account from the next working day after you have requested it, and these will continue to be forwarded at least until the end of the academic year (2011-12). At no point will any emails be lost. You are advised to check both your previous University email account (Webmail) as well as your new Outlook Live account for any incoming messages during the period between requesting your Outlook Live account and email forwarding commencing.

If you have used your previous University email address (Webmail) to set up accounts for services external to the University (e.g. EndNote Web or library databases), you should update them to your new @student.bradford.ac.uk address once you have requested it.

We strongly recommend that you import your existing Webmail emails into Outlook Live. Instructions on how to do this can be found in the new Outlook Live guide – see below.

Help and Advice for All Students

We have a new Outlook Live guide. This page also contains a link to a pdf version. The IT Services department will advise on the use of Outlook Live, however you will be responsible for looking after your email data and your files on the SkyDrive etc. This means that if you accidentally delete an email or a document we will be unable to retrieve it for you. A session on how to Get to grips with the new email and cluster software will be run on the 28th September 2011. If you need further help, please ask the Library and IT Help Desk.

New PC Cluster Software

Changes to IT.Returning students will notice that the operating system on the LSS-maintained cluster PCs has been upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and that Microsoft Office 2010 is installed. Be aware that some School clusters may differ.

A session on how to Get to grips with the new email and cluster software will be run on the 28th September 2011.

If you want to purchase your own Microsoft Office software, Software4Students is offering University students Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus for £37.89.

Blackboard – New Version

We are now running a new, enhanced version of Blackboard (v9.1). To help you get started we have created a customised set of Help resources, which include a range of videos, tutorials and guides showing how to do basic tasks in Blackboard and frequently asked questions. Login to Blackboard, click on the Help tab and then select the Help for Students tab.

Plagiarism Avoidance Course for New Students

Look out for the Plagiarism Avoidance for New Students course, which is compulsory for all new students. Plagiarism is defined as using other peoples’ ideas, words, data etc., and trying to pass them off as your own. It is a very important issue for all universities. You will be asked to take the Plagiarism Avoidance course in one of your Blackboard modules or organisations. The course will improve your awareness of plagiarism and test your knowledge. If you still experience problems with this topic, your personal or year tutor will offer you further help and advice.

Know Your Space!

We have a number of different learning zones to suit your needs. If you are not sure where to go then check out the pop up banners explaining where our silent, quiet and group study spaces are in both the J B Priestley Library and Student Central. Remember to check the entrance to the area you are in!

You want Silent Spaces to be Silent!

Room 2.7a in the J B Priestley Library is our only silent PC cluster on campus (all other PC clusters are for quiet study). We will be launching a Registered User Scheme for this room to ensure that only people who want (and will respect) silent PC use have access. To register as a user, please ask at the Library and IT Help Desk.

There are silent study zones on Levels 1 and 2 in the main resources area. All other areas are for individual quiet study. Group study spaces are available by booking a group study room in the J B Priestley Library, or in the Learning Mall and Union Mall in Student Central.

If you find your peace is being disturbed in any space, please let a member of staff or one of the Student Learning Champions know, or text Security direct on 07824 525906.
