The chair John holds in Corporate Identity is believed to be the only one of its kind. Before his appointment at Bradford he was a member of the faculty at Strathclyde Business School (Glasgow) where he was the founder-director of the International Centre for Corporate Identity Studies.

Since 1994 he has organised eight corporate identity conferences under the auspices of the International Corporate Identity Group. The conferences have been held at the universities of Oxford, Strathclyde and Bradford, and at the Queen Elizabeth the Second Conference Centre, Westminster. Keynote speakers have included Lords King and Marshall (British Airways), Lord Browne (group chief executive of BP) and a UK Secretary of State. In 1995 the International Corporate Identity Group was formally launched at the House of Lords.

He has acted as a special adviser to the BBC, Mercedes Benz and a number of corporate identity and corporate branding consultancies.

In an earlier life he was a manager in Lord Menuhin's concert agency "Live Music Now" and was a senior manager of the Dome Arts Complex in Brighton's Royal Pavilion Estate.
