Research projects:
1. Company mission statements
A research interest in business objectives led to a survey of the role of company mission statements as a tool of leadership. The results of this and a subsequent cross-cultural study of missions in Britain and overseas were published in management journals in the 1990s. Mary has embarked on a new phase of this work with a Ph.D. student, examining the uses of mission statement today and their relationship to strategic decision making in companies

2. Tourism and ethnic minorities
Mary's research on tourism and ethnic minorities in Bradford led to the award of a research grant from the European Social Fund in 2000 to investigate the reasons for ethnic divisions in the travel industry. The outcome of the project was a conference in Bradford attended by senior managers in the tourism industry and a report including policy recommendations for Yorkshire Forward the local regional development agency. On the academic side, the methodology and results of this study have been presented to international conferences and published in management journals. Mary is continuing this research theme by an examination of company diversity policies in the Bradford area.

3. International tour operators
Increasing vertical integration and consolidation in the UK travel trade have had negative consequences for the sustainability of tourism products and destinations. Mary has conducted research into company strategies, focusing especially on the balance of power between tour operators and destination suppliers, and the need for destinations to keep control of their own image and physical development.

4. Sustainability issues for tourism companies and planners
Mary's research on tourism planning and sustainability in a number of destinations in the UK,France and Spain has resulted in publications in tourism management journals and presentations at international conferences. Her particular interest is in policies for the sustainability of mass market destinations.
