Ma Kam Ming MSc Scholarship Fund
1. For entry in September 2011, the School of Management is offering up to four scholarships for full-time postgraduate study leading to the degree of MSc, at the School. These awards are designated the Ma Kam Ming Scholarships, in honour of his family's generous benefaction.
2. The scholarships are offered to candidates who meet the normal SoM/UoB admissions requirements for entry to the full-time MSc, and who are:
a) permanent residents of the Hong Kong SAR; or
b) citizens of the PR China.
Preference may be shown to graduates of:
c) a UGC-funded HEI in the Hong Kong SAR; or
d) an HEI in the PRC that is included in the Project 211; or
e) management/business studies.
3. Preference will be shown to candidates seeking the degree of MSc in International Business & Management, although candidates for any full-time MSc offered by the School in Bradford are eligible to apply for the scholarships, subject to the criteria specified in paragraph 2, above.
4. Candidates for the scholarships should accompany their initial application for admission to the MSc programme with a statement explaining how they meet the eligibility criteria. Eligible candidates who already hold offers of admission to the full-time MSc programme commencing September 2011, may also apply for scholarships. All applications for scholarship must be received by the School of Management by 31 July 2011, and decisions/awards should be announced by mid-August.
5. The scholarships are awarded by the scholarship selectors panel, the membership of which is:
one senior academic member of the permanent staff of the UoB, representing the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bradford;
one academic member of the permanent staff of the School of Management, representing the Dean of the School of Management;
one academic member of the staff of the School of Management who is knowledgeable about bachelor degree programmes offered by recognised HEIs in Hong Kong and in the PRC; and is supported by the secretary of the panel who will advise on School of Management application/admissions criteria and procedures, and is responsible for communication with candidates.
6. The awards are bestowed following the panel's evaluation of candidates'
a) academic attainment in bachelor's studies; and
b) application file including personal statement and references.
Candidates may be invited to provide additional written submissions (eg an essay on a topic to be designated by the selectors) or participate with selectors in further discussion of their applications (eg in person, or by telephone/skype/video conference). The decisions of the panel are final.
7. The School of Management expects to award two scholarships to candidates eligible under 2a, and two scholarships under 2b. The panel, however, reserves the right to vary the distribution in the light of the merit of candidates who apply, to award up to four scholarships under 2a, with none under 2b, and vice versa. The panel reserves the right to award three, two, one or no scholarships, if there are insufficient numbers of eligible candidates of appropriate merit.
8. The amount of each award will be determined by the secretary of the panel by reference to:
a) the prevailing full-time tuition fees appropriate to the scholarship holder's fee status, as published annually by the School of Management;
b) the prevailing APEX return economy airfare from the place of permanent residence of the scholarship holder, to Manchester airport;
c) the lower end of the range of expected living expenses for full-time MSc students in Bradford, as published annually by the School of Management.
9. The scholarships are tenable for one academic year, and cannot be extended or renewed. If an award-holder is unable to take up the award in the designated academic year, there is no undertaking by the School of Management to carry the scholarship forward to a subsequent academic year.
