Should art and music just entertain us or can it also be used to change the world?
Fieldworks at Gallery II, University of Bradford, explored this question through artistic research. The exhibition was created by Andy Abbott and Caroline Hick, Fellows in Art at the University of Bradford.
The University of Bradford Art Fellowships were originally established to offer professional artists the opportunity to make work, whilst informing, interacting with and inspiring the University as a whole. This principle still informs the work of the Fellows today.
Caroline Hick and Andy Abbott have used their respective roles as University of Bradford's Fellow in Visual Art (2009 – 2013) and Fellow in Music (2011 – date) to realise a number of projects that embody varied approaches to artistic research. What role does art play in education and social change today? Cuts in arts funding and the lack of inclusion of arts subjects within proposed changes to the UK secondary school curriculum have recently been a topic of intense debate. In this time of economic crisis and austerity we are forced to ask the question; what is the value of art?
