News
and ViewsNews & Views has undergone some changes over the summer which I hope our readers will be pleased with. To minimise the impact on the environment, and in keeping with the University's Ecoversity ethos, News & Views will now be produced three times a year instead of four. This not only ties in with the quieter summer months but also moves towards providing more digital content online. Look out for links inside the magazine.
Since spring, the University has had lots to celebrate and these exciting successes are shared with you in this edition. The University was pleased to open Student Central last month, the newly refurbished 'Commie' building which provides a new home for the Students' Union, student support services such as Careers and Counselling, alongside a range of formal and informal teaching spaces (page 4). The opening was celebrated not only with current students and staff but also with University alumni who attended a special alumni reunion page 5).
Ecoversity has been a focus for success over recent months, winning a number of awards including a prestigious international award for sustainability (page 6). The sustainable student village has been named as The Green and the magazine brings you the latest on the build, and also exciting news about a Sustainability and Enterprise Centre planned to be built on campus (page 7).
Graduation Ceremonies took place in July and the University awarded honorary degrees to six individuals over the three days. It was an action-packed three days time for Chancellor Imran Khan who met with students who received scholarships and a sevenyear- old girl who interviewed him about the use of sport to create peace (pages 12 - 15). This edition's My View is written by Head of Careers, Ron Harle, who discusses how the University is making the difference to our graduates looking for work in the employment market (pages 16 and 17).
Our Learning and Teaching (pages 18 and 19) include the celebration of two academics from the University who received National Teaching Fellowships. Research and Knowledge Transfer news (pages 20-25) highlights the discovery by archaeologists at the University of a major ceremonial monument less than a kilometre away from the iconic Stonehenge. And finally, new research that has found that redheads are just as capable of making the melanin needed for a tan as the olive-skinned locals.
We wish all of our new and returning students the very best for a new academic year.
