and ViewsWelcome to the September 2007 edition of News & Views.
Many people across England have been devastated by the flooding this summer. However, work is already under way to tackle some of the root causes of severe flooding in urban areas. This edition’s lead Research story sees Dr Liz Sharp and Professor Simon Tait working with local communities, local authorities and other agencies on examining the issues of flooding (page 16) and what can be done to reduce the risk in the future.
Our News includes the University’s involvement in the UK’s first video games academy (pages 4 and 5), recognition for the Atrium development from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (page 9), and how the School of Engineering, Design and Technology is taking a leading role in promoting women in the industry (page 10).
Don’t miss the fascinating guide to Traditional Chinese Medicines by Dr Qun Shao from the University’s Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation (My View, pages 12 and 13), who is using Artificial Intelligence to examine the properties of these medicines and how they could be integrated more into Western healthcare.
There is also some exciting news in Knowledge Transfer (pages 20 to 22), with the opening of the Centre for Micro and Nano Moulding, and the University’s reaccreditation of its Customer First status.
As News & Views goes to press we look forward to the start of a new academic year and all the excitement and expectation it brings.
