Welcome to the Spring 2008 edition of News & Views

We've gone quarterly!

In order to make the frequency easier to understand for our readers, News & Views will now be published seasonally. The next issues will be available as follows:

This month's issue has a wide range of stories including news that the University has received £5 million to develop courses designed to develop greater employer engagement in the Bradford District (page 4). The University held its third annual PeaceJam event in March at which 200 youngsters were inspired by Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchutum from Guatemala (page 5). There is a special feature on Ecoversity in this issue, which includes stories about Green Travel Week, a new biomass boiler and a recycled furniture initiative (pages 8 and 9).

Dr John Baruch from the School of Informatics discusses whether robot-controlled cars could be the future for our roads (pages 10 and 11), and our person in profile is Sarah Verbickas, the University's Student Bursaries Officer (pages 12 to 15). In February the University held its fourth Research Showcase to celebrate a wide range of research across the University and was themed to focus on research projects and centres that work within the city of Bradford and its communities (page 16).

A new £800,000 facility named the 'anechoic chamber' funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the EU has opened in the University's Mobile and Satellite Communications Research Centre (page 21). It is a sound-proof room which has completely dead acoustics and blocks out all radio waves, radiation and magnetic interference.

We hope you enjoy this issue and we'll see you in the summer..
