News
and ViewsWelcome to the Winter edition of News & Views and a belated Happy New Year.
It has been the first semester for the University with lots of exciting things happening.
As usual we've highlighted some of the best work that's been done in the University over the past few months, including the fifth annual Research and Knowledge Transfer showcase which this year had the theme of Health and Wellbeing (page 4).
The University is also delighted to announce that Dr David Francis, Chair of the University's Africa Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, has been appointed as a UNESCO Chair. David's post is the 11th UNESCO Chair in the United Kingdom, the first of its kind, and joins over 600 UNESCO Chairs established worldwide (page 5).
Professor Neil Small from the School of Health Studies discusses the implications for universities as they seek research collaborations with the NHS (pages 10 and 11) and our person in profile is Iain Bloomfield, the University's Head of Arts (pages 12-15).
Research news includes the results of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which were announced in December - the University's reputation for high quality research was further strengthened by these results (pages 16 and 17).
Knowledge Transfer news looks at an event which saw people thinking about ways to improve the general health of the city (page 20) and features the Knowledge Transfer partnership between the University and Sovereign Healthcare.
We wish our students good luck with their first semester exams.
Until the spring,
