Welcome to the Winter 2010 edition of News & Views

Welcome to the Winter edition of News & Views and a belated Happy New Year to you all.

The first semester at the University has had some exciting news emerging from it, and this issue highlights some of these stories.

In November the University highlighted its Research and Knowledge Transfer activity at the annual showcase with a focus on an interdisciplinary theme (page 4). It’s been a successful semester for Ecoversity bringing Green Travel Week to staff and students and winning an award for being a leading ‘Green’ University at the Times Higher Awards (page 5).

In December the University celebrated with students as they received their degrees from the Vice-Chancellor whilst five distinguished people received honorary degrees from the University (pages 12 and 13).

In this edition our Person in Profile is Director of Executive Education, Julian Rawel (pages 14-17).

Our Learning and Teaching (18 and 19) features plans to develop an island for the University in Second Life, a 3D virtual world, and a look at new methods of giving feedback to students at the University.

Research and Knowledge Transfer news (pages 20-25) highlights one year of the Ethical Tissue Bank after Head of Ethical Tissue, Sandie Martin, spoke at the House of Lords.

Winners of the Think Business 2009 Win £2,000 business planning competition award are also featured alongside the work of last year’s winner Tom Frankland.

We wish all of our students good luck with their Semester 1 exams.
