3 year full-time course
We accept up to 100 new undergraduates a year on to our three year full-time BSc (Hons) in Optometry course. Home, EU and overseas students are eligible to apply. Application to be considered for the course must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS site allows you to search for information on optometry courses and register for the on-line application procedure. We also run a Career progression optometry course.
The course at Bradford is strongly orientated toward the clinical practice of Optometry making it very suitable for those wishing to take up a career in this profession. Optometry is a highly vocational degree, and thus has fairly specific entry requirements.
Optometrists require an eye for detail. Probably their most critical role is in discriminating the subtle signs of early eye disease from normal variations in the appearance of the eye. Manual dexterity is important for many clinical techniques, some of which involve the precise positioning of a diagnostic instrument on to the surface of the eye. Optometry is a career centred on the professional care of patients, making good communication skills essential.
If accepted on to the course, we expect students to demonstrate the appropriate level of professionalism from the start. All students enrolled on the course must register with the General Optical Council (GOC) each year, and may be required by the GOC to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
The University seeks to provide equal opportunity for admission to all applicants with appropriate academic qualifications and experience, irrespective of factors such as age, gender, ethnic origin, religious persuasion or disability. The University of Bradford has always encouraged applications from students with disabilities, whose applications are considered on the same academic grounds as are applied to all candidates. If you have any form of disability, you may wish to contact the Admissions Secretary before you apply, to discuss any special needs you may have.
If you indicate a disability on your UCAS form, you will be invited to contact the Disability Service to discuss your particular requirements, and will receive information about our facilities, and on the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). For more information, help and advice, please contact the Disability Service.
