Why do a PhD at Bradford?

There are many reasons to choose Bradford School of Optometry and Vision Science for your postgraduate study:

  • State of the art facilities for research across a broad range of topics in Optometry and Vision Science.
  • High calibre research staff, many of whom are recognised throughout the world for their research contribution in their particular areas of interest.
  • We have strong links with ophthalmologists and orthoptists at NHS and private hospitals in the area, giving access to a broad range of different patients and research subjects.
  • Many of our research staff collaborate with academics in other parts of the University and at other institutions, providing the opportunity for cross-disciplinary projects.

  • We are relatively unusual among UK Optometry Departments in being able to offer funded studentships, allowing more flexibility in terms of research topic and removing the financial burden that can be associated with postgraduate study. In addition, Bradford is one of the most affordable cities in the country in which to live.
  • Ph.D. success is very dependent on selecting an area of research that excites you and having the support of supervisors with whom you can develop a good rapport. Successful applicants to our research studentship programme are invited to discuss possible areas of study with a range of potential supervisors within the School before committing to a particular research area.
  • The University's Graduate School offers a comprehensive programme of short courses for postgraduate research students. This includes an induction programme, courses on presentation techniques, thesis preparation and preparing for the Ph.D. viva.
