Davina has a research reputation in the arms trade following the publication of her book, Export or Die: Britain's Defence Trade with Iran and Iraq, Cassell, 1996. She went on to publish in the area of Western foreign policy towards the Middle East. Davina maintains links with the Iranian Diaspora. She is a Fellow of the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies and has been invited to contribute to the Defence Academy's work on Iran.

Davina is developing a second area as an outcome of her four years' experience as a city councillor in Salford in seeking to systematise her practitioner knowledge around issues of participation and community engagement. Working with the International Centre for Participation Studies, Davina is contributing a case study to Jenny Pearce's ESRC project on municipal innovation in non-governmental public action in Latin America and the UK. Further building on her experience as a city councillor in Salford, Davina is also mentoring community researchers as part of another ICPS project, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, examining participation on the white estates of Bradford.
