Access & Widening Participation

The University has one of the most socially inclusive student populations in the UK. We work hard to encourage participation from all communities, and we aim to offer the best possible learning experience for all students irrespective of their cultural, social, health or financial background.

The Access & Widening Participation team is responsible for the University-wide approach, on engagement with schools, communities and those students who need a little extra support to help them engage in life at University.

Range of Services

We organise a range of activities to raise interest in Higher Education amongst many under-represented communities such as white working class boys, 'looked after' children, care leavers, learners in the workplace, asylum seekers, refugees and disabled students.

It is a testament to our success that the University has an above average number of students with disabilities within the student body.

We develop and nurture partnerships with the wider community using specific locality engagement teams working alongside local schools, community groups and other partners. Our work has resulted in the University being invited to lead on the development of an Academy and also to become the lead trustee for several National Challenge Trust schools.

Below are just a few of the activities organised by the Access and Widening Participation team:

  • Ace Days
  • Associate Schools Scheme
  • Children's University
  • Disability Spring School
  • Junior University
  • Learning in the Community
  • Out of hours learning opportunities - A/S Level
