Summary

HIV continues to be a major problem for all age groups. In the case of children, the commonest route of infection is by vertical transmission from a mother who is HIV positive. Various studies have shown that certain measures taken by the mother during pregnancy can reduce the risk of vertical transmission significantly. All mothers in the UK should therefore be offered an HIV test, as in other European countries.
