Useful sources and texts The texts below are either recent, relevant, particularly significant in the field of epidemiology and HIV/AIDS, or an item I especially enjoyed reading. Camus, A. (1971 - my edition) - The Plague (la Peste). Penguin, London 50 years old this year, this novel examines the way plague effects various people - good expose of paranoia and attribution of blame to individuals, and creation of plague to a transcendental being. Flaskerud, J. & Ungvarski, P. (1997) - HIV/AIDS: A Guide to Nursing Care (3rd edition). Harcourt Brace, Philadelphia One of the best, all round texbooks, especially chapters 1, 2 and 4 Garrett, L. (1995) - The Coming Plague: newly emerging diseases in a world out of balance. Penguin, London Very detailed, doom-laden text that predicts catastrophe in the future (disputed by Wills, below, however). Worth reading for the information and strength of argument, though. Health Education Authority (1997) - HIV and AIDS on the World Wide Web. HEA, London Useful (the first in the UK) resource, covering HIV/AIDS websites - many useful links, though will go quickly out of date - to obtain a free copy, ring 0171 388 9855 Karlen, A. (1996) - Plague's Progress: A Social History of Man and Disease. London, Indigo - general overview of man and disease - vital reading if the AIDS pandeimc is to be understood in the context of history Moore, O. (1996) - PWA: Looking AIDS in the Face. Picador, London Excellent and moving book, compiled from the 'GuardianŽarticles published over the 2 years before Oscar died of an AIDS related illness Pratt, R. (1995) (4th edition) - HIV/AIDS - A Strategy for Nursing Care. Arnold, London Extremely useful text for nurses and carers in the field of HIV care. Wills, C. (1996) - Plagues: Their Origin, History and Future. Flamingo, London Overview of plagues from prehistory to the present. Good chapter on HIV, and much useful information about other conditions, including syphilis. Very readable. Wills, C. (1996) - Yellow Fever, Black Goddess: The Coevolution of People and Plagues. Addison Wesley, Massachusetts Another fascinating book from Wills - you can find detailed information about the book here here
