The first practical step towards this objective was taken by Prof.
Ernest Hinton who organised a NAFEMS Design and Research Awareness
Seminar on Optimization: Engineering Intuition, Mathematical Rigour
and Benchmarks on 3 September 1996 in Grantham. This event highlighted
an iterest of the British industry in new developments offered by researchers.
At the Second
World Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (WCSMO-2)
held in Zakopane, Poland, May 26-30, 1997, it was decided to take further
steps towards organisation of the group. ASMO UK - Association for Structural
and Multidisciplinary Optimization in the UK - was suggested as the name
of the group, Ernest
Hinton and Vassili Toropov
agreed to become its chairman and secretary. They have been formally elected
at the first 1st ASMO UK conference on Engineering
Design Optimization held at The Craiglands hotel in Ilkley,
West Yorkshire on Thursday, 8 July and Friday, 9 July 1999.
In 1998 a group of academics and industrialists formed an EPSRC-sponsored research network called EDO-NET: Engineering Design Optimization Network which intends to closely liaise with ASMO UK. Here are a few facts about EDO-NET.
The first ASMO UK conference on Engineering Design
Optimization was held at The Craiglands hotel in Ilkley, West Yorkshire
on 8 and 9 July 1999, see a pictorial report here.
The conference was partly supported by EDO-NET. The second ASMO UK / ISSMO
Conference will be held in Swansea, Wales, on Monday, 10 July and Tuesday,
11 July 2000. Please contact Dr
Hans Sienz of the University of Wales Swansea or the secretary
if you need more information.
