Filament impregnation and filament winding

Position for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Delft University of Technology (2 years)

The Structural Optimization and Computational Mechanics (SOCM) group of Delft University of Technology is looking for a post-doctoral research fellow. This position is fully supported by an industrial partner.

In the laboratory of the SOCM group, research is carried out on alternative filament winding processes, using thermoplastic polymers. This research involves the impregnation with thermoplastic resin, the winding process itself and the simulation and optimization of these processes. At this moment a working prototype is available, which has demonstrated the feasibility of the research direction. However, optimization, modification and further development is necessary. Moreover, filament winding with thermoplastics opens the possibility to produce new products by alleviating limitations such as geodetic winding patterns.

The post-doctoral research fellow has to develop the proposed production process. Main points of attention will be the impregnation unit used, realization of the winding process and demonstration and testing on several products. Aspects that will determine the success of the process are: reliability, controllability, speed, material and structural quality, easy of handling and versatility.

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with our permanent staff and (under)graduate students.
