Community Interpreting (Certificate of Continuing Education)

Dates and duration

The next course takes place in September 2011 and runs for 12 weeks.

Introduction

This course is suited for a wide range of audiences particularly if you deliver interpreting services on a voluntary basis and would like to formalise your experience in this area of work

As an alternative there is a stand-alone module (20 credits) in Community Interpreting which costs £350.00

It is recognised in the Bradford District and has been developed to provide a measurable benchmark for agencies using Interpreters to assess the effectiveness of the interpreting skills.

Aims

This course will help you develop, improve and practice interpreting and translation skills.

Syllabus

The course covers areas such as:

  • Roles and responsibilities of being an Interpreter
  • Working with public sector providers
  • Working with people in vulnerable situations
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivities
  • How to become a freelance interpreter

3 modules must be taken in total to achieve 60 credits

Core modules

  • Community Interpreting (20 Credits - Level 1)
  • Inter Cultural Understanding (20 Credits - Level 1)

Optional modules

  • Exploring Self Employment - (20 Credits - Level 0)
  • Advanced English for Interpreters - (20 Credits - Level 1)

Delivery

Practical taught group sessions with each module are delivered over 2-3 hours, for 12 weeks, usually in the evening. You will be expected to consolidate your learning through additional guided study.

Fees

£950 (£150 per 20 credits module plus examination fee)

Admissions

You will need a good ability in English and have reached an IELTS score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each of the sub-tests (or equivalent).

Professional interpreting experience is not necessary.

If you are interpreting as part of your job, this course may be paid for by your employer.
