Work Placements - undergraduate courses
You can get work experience through your undergraduate course in a variety of ways. Many undergraduate courses have placements integrated into them such as our four-year sandwich programmes. You spend your first two years at the University and then head out for a year, utilising your knowledge in industry, before heading back to consolidate what you have learnt in your final year. If the course you want to study doesn't have a four-year route, you can always arrange to take your own year out in industry and there will be help and advice available on how to do this.
Other courses, such as Nursing and other professional health-related courses, have ongoing work experience as an integral part of the course, so you will be out learning at the coalface right from the start. Courses such as Peace Studies or Archaeological Sciences will enable you to work-shadow or volunteer on certain modules. You could find yourself helping resolve conflict in a community situation or digging for ancient artefacts at our excavation in Pompeii.
If you want to enter a professional field, such as pharmacy, our courses will let you develop the skills required to enter the professional body. Students on our unique MPharm course take two six-month placements and graduate as fully qualified pharmacists, without the need for a further 12 months of pre-registration training.
Other Opportunities
You can also use your spare time to build up your CV and distinguish yourself from the crowd. If you have no plans for the summer break then an Internship may be an attractive option. You would typically spend several weeks in an organisation, getting a flavour of what it would be like to work there by shadowing one the of the staff or working on a short-term project. Many employers actively seek out Bradford students, so the careers service should be able to help you set up something interesting.
Volunteer - all students
There are also opportunities to go into schools to help out on a voluntary basis, and literally dozens of other volunteering opportunities through the UCAN scheme.
Earn while you learn - all students
If you want even more experience, and maybe a bit of extra money, there are lots of opportunities to work part-time through our JobShop.
