The Higher Education Summer School (HESS) is held at the University of Bradford for one week each July.
The aim of the HESS is to widen participation in Higher Education (HE) by targeting young people from under-represented groups to participate in experiencing a taste of university life. It particularly targets school pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds where there is no tradition of accessing HE or pupils who have the ability but lack information or knowledge to do so.
The HESS programme offers a combination of residential and non residential places. All participants are offered an opportunity to take part in academic workshops based on aspects of undergraduate courses currently available at the University.
The summer school also has fun elements consisting of a wide range of social activities including sports, a cinema visit, ten pin bowling and Summer School Party Night, all designed to allow participants to make new friends and relax after a busy day.
Student Ambassadors play a vital role during the summer school in helping to both befriend and supervise the participants during their stay at the University. The work is paid and the days are long but worth every minute if you enjoy working with young people.
