Bussing Out will focus on a hidden history that shaped the identity of ethnic minority children who came to Bradford in the sixties and seventies. Bussing Out was a Department of Education Policy advising local authorities to disperse ‘immigrant’ children from urban inner city primary schools into schools in outlying white areas. The reason for this was racially motivated; because the ‘immigrant’ children meant Black and Asian children. Immigration and integration continues to be hot topic, and dispersal is often brought up again and again as the solution.
This production is an exploration of these themes using oral histories of seventeen adults who were bussed as children. Participatory workshops with school children in Bradford today will shape this work in progress by Cleanskin Productions. This rehearsed reading will use sixties sci-fi and documentary theatre techniques to explore the dispersal policy.
Cleanskin is an artist led company aiming to create world-class multimedia performance and art for social change through participatory processes.
