Profile

Tom Frankland Think Business Competition Winner Tom Frankland is making the most of his unusual combination of degree subjects by carving a niche for himself in the world of archaeological animation. Having graduated from the University of Bradford with a BSc in Computer Animation and Special Effects he is now studying for an MA in Archaeology.

What does your company do?

ArchaeoFX creates 3D reconstructions of archaeological remains that can be experienced and explored by the viewer.

What's been your biggest success?

I wasn't really expecting it, but I believe that one of my biggest successes has been the big boost to my self-confidence that launching and promoting my business has given me.Tom Frankland of ArcheoFX in Lister Park.

Another big success was securing innovation voucher money from Business Link with the help of Think Business. This enabled me to travel to the Faroe Islands to conduct some research there on a new business idea, which was a fantastic trip that I would otherwise not have had the chance to experience.

What's been the hardest thing you've had to cope with?

I have frequently struggled to manage my time between setting up the business, writing essays for university and working in a part-time job. Looking on the positive side, it has been surprising how many of the skills I have learnt through Think Business have been useful in these other areas of my life.

What advice would you give other new businesses?

I think the most important advice I could give to another new business would be to ensure you're pursuing something you feel passionately about. I feel if you are passionate about what you do then everything else you need to be successful, such as hard-work, perseverance and dedication, will all come naturally.

I would also like to say to anyone who is thinking of working in archaeology, don't be put off by the lack of jobs for new graduates, there are opportunities out there and starting your own business is certainly one of them.

What plans do you have for the future of ArchaeoFX?

Tom Frankland.
I've recently been developing a new artistic, stylised technique that I will hopefully be able to use on all my reconstructions, which will ensure the work I produce is original, creative and more focused towards the archaeological market.

I really enjoy my work, so my long-term ambition is really just to set up a business that will allow me to continue this far into the future.

What would you like to see from ThinkBusiness@Bradford in the future?

I think little needs to be changed, the level of support is great, and it has meant my business has started with a strong foundation. I have especially enjoyed the workshops that have assisted me in developing a wide range of skills; I think many businesses would benefit if there were more of these made available in the future.
