Overview

The Business Studies and Law degree is good preparation for careers in business which have legal dimensions. The course may be taken either over three years, or four years with one year in a supervised work experience placement.

Aims

The first year comprises six introductory business modules in areas such as accounting, marketing and information systems, alongside six introductory law modules dealing with subjects such as contract and public law. The second and third years build on this knowledge, with equal numbers of modules in business and in law.

You have the opportunity to participate in various student activities which gives you access to professionals in practice. This degree enables you to take some of the Foundation subjects specified by the Joint Academic Stage Board (JASB) and thus, where appropriate, apply for partial exemption from the academic stage of training if you want to become a solicitor or barrister.

Career Outcome

After a period of postgraduate professional training, you may be admitted to practice as a solicitor or barrister. (NB Holders of LLB degrees are required to complete the postgraduate Legal Practice Certificate or Bar Vocational Course.)

Alternatively, you may be employed by organisations such as building societies, insurance companies or other financial services institutions.

You may enter business and commerce, the civil service, local government, the police force, politics, the media, or go on to postgraduate legal study.

The University has an excellent graduate employment record.
