Overview

The Occupational Therapy programme at Bradford incorporates a wide range of creative media (dance, writing, art, dance, music and movement) within its teaching, learning and assessment strategies and also enables students to appreciate the use of these within contemporary practice.

Special Features

  • Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are two of the Allied Health Professions. Practitioners use their expertise and skills to treat and rehabilitate people with a range of health and social care problems and work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals
  • The prime purpose of Physiotherapy is to restore and maintain function, activity and independence, and to prevent injury through information and advice on health lifestyles
  • Occupational Therapists work with people who have reduced levels of opportunity and/or abilities to engage in an range of everyday tasks (e.g. home life, employment or leisure activities), enabling them to function to the best of the abilities and to improve their quality of life
  • Access exciting new practice simulation suites in the new School of Health Studies building

Aims

The Occupational Therapy programme at Bradford has been established for more than five years. The course forms part of a West Yorkshire collaboration for Occupational Therapy education between three local universities and was developed in response to the growing need for qualified Occupational Therapists in the area.

At Bradford, you have the opportunity to learn within a small cohort, gain skills in problem solving and analysis and develop excellent skills in teamwork and appreciation of the issues of diversity within professional practice. The course will also encourage additional skills which will enable graduates to use creative media as therapeutic tools within occupational therapy. The course also recognises the expanding types of work for occupational therapists and incorporates within the curriculum aspects of entrepreneurship, business and management skills.

By the end of your studies, you will meet the professional educational standards expected of the College of Occupational Therapists, Health Professions Council (HPC) and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

UK and EC nationals are currently eligible for NHS funding to cover tuition fees. Students meeting UK residency requirements are also eligible to apply for NHS student bursaries. Please note that this scheme is subject to change. The latest information can be found at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students (external link)

Career Outcome

Local clinicians frequently comment on the high quality of practical skills the Occupational Therapy students demonstrate whilst on placement, and this develops high employment possibilities for graduating students within the local geographical area. The course content prepares graduates for roles in private, NHS or social services employment or for jobs outside of the usual statutory organisations.

Entrance Requirements

Standard Offer

Our standard offer is 280 points (e.g. B,B,C) from 3 full A levels (or vocational awards of equal depth and volume). It is preferable for applicants to achieve at least 80 points from a Science-related A level (e.g. Biology, Human Biology, Psychology, Sociology). Double award A-level subjects are accepted, but we do not accept A-level General Studies.

You should also have at least 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above to include English and Mathematics.

Students must also show evidence of recent study in the last three years.

Non-standard Offer

Those studying Access, should follow a programme in Health Professions or Science and will be asked to achieve a distinction in science-based modules and merits in the remainder of your modules. If you study an Access course, the GCSE requirements may be included within your programme of study, although this will vary depending on the FE institution you study at.

Applicants from the Bradford Foundation Year or other appropriate science foundation year need to achieve a minimum of 65% in their course.

Key Skills level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy will be considered in lieu of GCSEs in English and Mathematics.

Students must also show evidence of recent study in the last three years.

As clinical work will involve patients who may be vulnerable including children, babies and people with learning disabilities, offers will be subject to Criminal Records Bureau disclosure and an Occupational Health check. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed and will be asked to demonstrate motivation and understanding of physiotherapy/occupational therapy as a career at the interview.

Bradford Foundation Year

Those without the required qualifications or experience can consider the Bradford Foundation Year. Progression from this is not guaranteed, and is dependent on module choices or overall achievement on the programme.
