Director of education and training with Ford of Europe, he has launched a number of major training initiatives. They include a Europe-wide quality improvement training programme, Equip, upon which the Bradford MSc is based, a worldwide supervisor training programme and the degree programmes for which Ford is now well known. When he took over, around 60 employees were studying for part-time degrees. Now more than 1,350 are completing part-time programmes at bachelor and master level in engineering and business studies throughout Europe. Stuart Hamer directed the development of the Bradford MSc programme. He is a member of the Entra Council, which has worked on the development of qualification standards in Britain, and the Learning from Experience Trust, which encourages adult training initiatives. He is honoured in recognition of his work as director of education and training with Ford of Europe, and in particular because of his interest in and support of the continuing and higher education of practising engineers.

A concert pianist, Dorothy Roberts has appeared as a soloist at venues including London's Royal Albert Hall, and worked with orchestras including the Halle and Northern Sinfonia. She has appeared in concerts in the United Kingdom, Holland, France, Germany, Canada and Australia. She is known as a performer of the Clara Schumann tradition. Dorothy Roberts is also an abstract painter in oil and watercolour. She has exhibited in London and New York and her works are in private collections. She is honoured for her contribution to music as a concert pianist, and for her enthusiastic support and encouragement of the University.

Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire since 1992, John Lyles was chairman of the Association of Yorkshire and Humberside Chambers of Commerce, Yorkshire and Humberside Confederation of British Industry, and Industry Year, 1986. He recently retired as chairman of S Lyles plc, carpet yarn manufacturers. He was High Sheriff of West Yorkshire between 1985 and 1986, and chairman of the Shrievalty Association from 1993-95. A keen gardener, he is a vice-patron of the Royal National Rose Society. He is also a member of the Yorkshire Committee of the National Trust. John Lyles is honoured for his contribution to West Yorkshire, including that as Lord Lieutenant.

Bryan Mosley plays the role of Alf Roberts in Coronation Street.. He trained at the Northern Theatre School in Bradford, before entering repertory theatre. Among his many television credits are Armchair Theatre and Z Cars. His film credits include Get Carter, Far from the Madding Crowd and A Kind of Loving. Bryan Mosley holds a special citation for acting, from US television, for his role in a television commercial. He is a founder member of the Society of British Fight Directors, and an honorary member of the Society of Fine Arts. He is honoured for his contributions to television, theatre and charity.

Robert Sowman has a long association with Bradford and Ilkley Community College, as a former member and chairman of the governing body and as current chairman of corporation. He is director of a Bradford-based charitable trust providing business training for the long-term unemployed. He has been a Bradford City Council member since 1979. He was Lord Mayor of Bradford in 1993-94 and is currently a deputy lieutenant of West Yorkshire. He is honoured for services to the local community, and in particular for his contribution to further education and for his work as chairman of the corporation at Bradford and Ilkley Community College.
