This site now serves as an archive only for historical purposes.

The Web 2000 project provided the University with opportunity to expand and improve its Web site, promote the use of the Web and maximise its potential as a powerful tool for everyone at the University.  Although the project was drawn to a close at the end of 2001, we continue to build upon its foundations.

Current support to Web users and developers is available on the Learning Support Services Web authoring resources page.

Project Outline

Web 2000 is a project designed to promote the use of the World Wide Web at the University of Bradford. This will be achieved by

  • improving access to information and services available on the WWW
  • raising awareness of the WWW and its potential
  • providing support and advice for those wishing to exploit the WWW
  • implementing projects that expand the use of the WWW

Web 2000 has an impact on nearly all of the University's core activities: teaching and learning; research; recruitment; public relations and internal communications.  The project is overseen by the World Wide Web Advisory Board

Aims

The University web pages will be redesigned to provide an improved interface that is attractive, easy to use and quick to download. The new web site will aim to promote University of Bradford to visitors and potential students, but will also take into account the needs of staff and students who use the WWW to support their work and study.

A series of events will be organised to raise awareness of the WWW and highlight its potential. Experts from within and outside the University will be asked to give talks and lead workshops. Celebrity guest speakers will be invited.

Training and consultancy will be provided to help individuals and departments achieve their aims in relation to the Web. The Computer Centre already offers basic training in Web authoring, but it is clear that there is already a demand for courses covering more advanced and specialised topics, such as graphics creation and programming for the Web. As far as possible, training and advice will be closely tailored to the needs of individual departments.

A number of projects are planned for Web 2000 which will expand and develop the use of the WWW, particularly in the area of teaching and learning. New projects will provide greater support for online collaborative learning and assessment.

Who is involved?

Everyone at the University. Surveys and focus groups will be used to gather opinions and ideas from across the institution, and it is hoped that many people will become involved in specific projects that will bring benefits to their particular area of work. All the training and development events planned for Web 2000 will be open to all members of staff, and some will also be open to students.

Timescales

Web 2000 began January 1999, with the initiation of the consultation process for the redesign of the University web site.

The year 2000 saw a stimulating programme of events, the formation of the Information Providers' forum, and the appointment of a Web Officer in Marketing and Corporate Communications. Web 2000 continues to offer training and development opportunities designed to educate, inform and encourage all those with a stake in the WWW.

It is envisaged that the new Web site will be launched before Easter 2001 to coincide with the launch of newly designed publicity materials for the 2001/2002 recruitment process.

Web 2000 does not, however, stop there.  The Web and its uses are continually moving forward as new technologies are developed.  The use of the University Web site and its underlying technologies will continue to be reviewed and further developed to ensure it meets the changing needs of its users.

To top.
