Dynamics of Success: A personal history of selling, November 2011
Bradford Management Alumni in London Event November 2011
Dynamics of Success: A personal history of selling (by Pol O Morain, Committee Member)
On the 30th November, Paul Cooper (School of Management 1982) led the London Alumni through a dynamic, engaging and very interactive ‘A personal history of selling’. Around 40 Bradford alumni came together to attend this highly popular event in central London.
Paul took us on a journey that spanned continents, Bradford learning, and the world’s technology giants. A journey through the early 80’s to the present, and from selling art to selling leading edge technological solutions.
From the US, key lessons included; niche is best, rejection is a positive step, customers are the best sales people and the best customers pay cash. From the US we moved on to ‘SPIN’ (essential reading for the uninitiated) including sometimes amusing insights from Xerox. We migrated with Xerox to Australia, entwining Rugby and Management before bouncing back to Dublin and Dell. Then onwards in Britain from the late 90’s to 2011. The dialogue on the return to Europe brought in the emergence of ‘modern marketing’ and of customer centric selling including insights from IBM.
Paul shared insights in harnessing networks (LinkedIn), understanding goals, the importance of creating a ‘champion’ inside your target organisation and the critical nature of ‘access to power’. Key lessons included to define the process (success metrics), focus on outcomes (measurable), and network extensively.

Brunei Alumni Reunion October 2011
On 11 October 2011, Teresa Stead from the International Office and Dr Nazira Karodia from the Faculty of Life Sciences attended an alumni reunion in Brunei. 15 Alumni attended in total 13 of which were new graduates in 2011, 1 graduate from 1997 and 1 graduate from 1986.
The graduates came from a wide range of subject areas across all faculties of the University, the majority having studied undergraduate courses. Two of the July 2011 graduates who had studied BA English have been successful in securing employment as teachers at Katok 6th Form College within a month of returning to Brunei.
The event was an informal dinner at a local restaurant, Aneka Rasa, Kiulap, providing excellent food, which continued in to Karaoke. All enjoyed the evening, in a relaxed atmosphere and relived some of their memories and experiences shared during their time spent in Bradford.
Brunei Alumni Reunion October 2011
Malaysia Alumni Reunion October 2011
A further overseas alumni reunion happened on 13 October 2011 in Kuala Lumpa. 14 alumni attended in total, many of whom had graduated in 2000 – 2001, from various schools across the university, Engineering, Life Sciences and Management being the most prominent.
Assoc Prof Dr Faridah Nor is still awaiting her graduation ceremony due to the cancellation of the December 2010 ceremonies because of a large snowfall, which brought the city of Bradford to a standstill. She was a research student in Archaeological Science and is a key person in Malaysia in crime related incidents, and usually the first port of call for the Malaysian Police.
The evening was an informal event and the restaurant provided excellent food, which was enjoyed by all, many wishing to return in the future.
A key feature of the night was the alumni being given the opportunity of being able to network with each other on both a social and professional basis, which was welcomed by all, due to some important members of the local community being present.
Pharmacy Class of 1991 Reunion July 2011
To celebrate their 20 year anniversary of graduation, the class of 1991 Pharmacy graduates organised a visit back to campus. The reunion was promoted via Facebook and an invitation was sent to the year group via the University's Alumni Office. The group were proud to report that around one third of the class attended the reunion back in July and were delighted to be reunited and share in the nostalgia!
The reunion consisted of lunch at a local curry house, a tour of the campus, (in particular the new Life Sciences facilities), a tour of Student Central, followed by an Italian meal and a night out in the city. Similar events for 1969 and 1970 have also taken place in the past (noted below) and the Bradford School of Pharmacy are looking forward to hosting further reunions for other year groups on an annual basis.
Big Bradford Reunion September 2010
Around 150 Bradford graduates from every decade since 1966 joined us to preview the new Student Central building on Saturday 11 September 2010 before its official opening. The day began with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary and Students' Union Secretary-Treasurer, Khaled Almudallal, welcoming the graduates and their guests back onto campus and into the impressive Student Central.
The programme included tours of Student Central proudly led by Union staff and sabbaticals whilst current students guided graduates around the campus, pointing out the numerous new completed buildings that have transformed the campus over the last six years and the ongoing development work which includes the new Faculty of Health Studies building and the sustainable student village, The Green, both of which are due to open in September 2011.
A delicious Bradford curry was on the menu for lunch and enjoyed by all in the refurbished Entertainment Mall on the lower ground floor, whilst being entertained by a special record request show provided by Ramair's Phil Lickley.
Academic Schools opened the doors to their graduates in the afternoon, providing activities, talks and tours which were very well received. Back at Student Central, EIMC graduate, Rob Wilmot, co-founder of internet giant Freeserve who was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University, provided a very personal glimpse into his amazing life since leaving Bradford in 1994. Rob's talk was a fitting finish to a very enjoyable day.
Social Sciences graduate Eve Parker, said: "I had a most enjoyable and interesting day, it's good to see the, very changed, University as well as a good chance to meet up with old friends".
While Ahmad Arafa, who studied Chemical Engineering and graduated in 1973 said: "I have not enjoyed anything as much in a long time. It really was like coming home (after nearly 40 years)! The new University facilities are wonderful. They say that at my age you don't like change - but I have to say that compared to what we had in 1973, all the changes are for the better."

Class of 1970 Pharmacy Reunion 2010
Unsurprisingly the exercise bikes remained untouched by the end of the afternoon...
Fifteen years after our first reunion a slightly different group to the last time met in Bradford to see the much re-vamped School of Pharmacy and a very changed city. Name badges (requested as a precaution, as amazingly we no longer had the looks of eager 21 year olds) were provided when we congregated in the atrium, but soon became unnecessary as memories refocused on a time, 40 years earlier, and friends found a common purpose once again.
We were joined in the atrium by one of our much loved lecturers and tutor, Dr Max Foy, who had a great deal to contribute to the seemingly endless stories and exchanges taking place. We then moved up to N floor where we were met by Head of Dept., Prof Kay Marshall, and Dr Jon Silcock, who kindly gave up their afternoon to show us round and talk about the changes to the School. We also were shown a short film of the University with newly arriving students, made in the period 1967 to 70 when we were there - bit of a culture shock to say the least.
Class of 1969 Pharmacy Reunion 2009
A reunion of Bradford University pharmacy students took place over a week-end in late September 2009 and served as a celebration of 40 years since graduation. We stayed centrally at the Midland Hotel who were most accommodating in providing an evening meal, overnight stay and a Sunday lunch at a most modest cost. It was the first time that some of the attendees had met each other since their graduation although a similar week-end had been arranged some 20 years earlier. It was most interesting to note that although many of us had changed physically the characteristics and voices had not, allowing easier identification.
A most enjoyable evening meal was taken followed by a robust evening in the bar area (no change there) where stories of past university endeavours/glories and careers were exchanged into the late hours. The following day we were treated to a visit to the Pharmacy Department. This was a most exceptional event. How the Department had changed over the years was beyond belief and the course content more clinical. Laboratories with individual computers and video equipment to spare. We all returned amazed to the hotel for Sunday lunch and promised to try to attempt another event in 5 years time.
(Alastair Ferguson would be pleased to hear from any of his former pharmacy (or other disciplines) colleagues on email@example.com.)
