Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?

I applied for the summer experience internship to gain some experience out in the industry. It gave me a chance to apply what I have learnt and how those skills would be used in a professional setting.

What did you enjoy about the Internship?

What I found enjoyable was that the role required me to apply both the computing and the business sides of my course. This allowed me to learn more about how the two work together in the industry and what to expect once I start looking for graduate jobs.

What tips would you give to prospective students?

Make sure your CV is up to date with your current studies and experience and is professional. Also, cover letters are important as this gives potential employers a little more insight into the experiences and skills you have and it gives potential employers a good impression.

What support did you receive from Career and Employability Services?

The Careers Service helped me from the start. They help you write CVs and CLs to make sure they reach the professional standard needed. They also offered and advised me on what the interview process would be like and how to answer questions professionally. They also come to the place where you have the internship to check your progress and if they can help any further.

What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?

I have been a Student Rep as this role tests my leadership, communication, listening and negotiating skills, as the role majority of the time would be engaging with all types of people.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?

It's important to start applying for internships early.

Also, apply to as many positions as possible as experience is needed if you want to find a job after you graduate, and if you don't hear back from them ask the Careers Service for feedback for next time.

Any last words?

It's important to find and have experience in the industry you are interested in. If you have a career in mind but haven't had any experience in it, it is important that you find one as this would give you a clearer insight about what the role actually entails and if it is the right role for you.
