University Composite Floor Testing Progresses

Ground-breaking research into concrete in construction has been underway at the University of Bradford's School of Engineering.

The University of Bradford, together with Steel Construction Institute (SCI), the Universities of Stuttgart and Luxembourg, and Arcelor Mittal, has been working on a project aimed at developing more efficient shear connection rules for modern long span composite construction.

The DISCCO (or Development of improved shear connection rules in composite beams) project, was launched in 2012, has already underpinned design treatments in British, European and other national standards for composite construction.

Professor Dennis Lam, Chair in Structural Engineering at the University of Bradford, explains: “As part of the DISCCO project, a full-scale composite floor plate test is currently being prepared to investigate the interaction between the primary and secondary composite beams in a composite construction. It is very exciting as this is probably the second largest composite floor plate test since the BRE Cardington tests in the mid 1990s.”

The results from this project will provide important information for the new revision of the Eurocode 4, the European Standard for the design of composite structures, and are expected to be published in the coming months.
