Environment Management

Overview

  • To work towards a sustainable campus.
  • To improve environmental performance through the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) compliant with internationally recognised environmental standards.
  • To improve environmental performance through the development, implementation and review of annual environmental action plans.

Service Provision from Estates & Facilities Department

  • Systematically quantify the Universities impact on the environment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date environmental policy.
  • Identify environmental legislation and to which the University must comply.
  • Develop an annual environmental action plan of objectives, targets and actions in line with the environmental policy, environmental impacts and legislative requirements.
  • Establish environmental roles and responsibilities and provide sufficient resources (financial, human and technological) to improve environmental performance.
  • Identify the environmental awareness needs of personnel whose work may have a significant impact on the environment and ensure through training and development such employees are competent to perform the work.
  • Maintain processes for the internal and external communication of key environmental information.
  • Identify, plan and manage those operations and activities that have an environmental impact.
  • Establish and maintain an environmental emergency response plan for dealing with potential accident and emergency situations and for mitigating any impact on the environment associate with them.
  • Monitoring and measuring the Universities significant impacts on the environment.
  • Identify, correct and prevent any non-conformances against the environmental policy, action plan an EMS and operational controls.
  • Maintain records demonstrating the core elements of the EMS and the Universities environmental performance.
  • Periodically verify the Universities environmental performance and implementation of the EMS.
  • Periodically review the EMS to ensure its ongoing suitability and effectiveness.
  • Develop an annual statement of our environmental performance.

Additional Commitments

  • Work in partnership with the local community, City and Region to improve the local environment for mutual benefit.
  • Work towards improving performance against the Regional Business in the Community Environmental Survey.
  • Support the Environmental Steering Group.
  • Source external independent verifiers to certify the environmental performance of the University.

Responsibilities of Users

  • Maintain familiarity with current environmental policies and action plans.
  • Conform to environmental policy commitments within academic departmental and user operations and activities.
  • To develop procedures or controls for those operations and activities which have a significant impact on the environment.
  • To comply with environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide records as necessary to demonstrate environmental performance.
  • Provide access to information, personnel and facilities during scheduled environmental audits and external certification.
  • Implement corrective action plans wherever a non-conformance has been identified against the environmental policy, action plan, EMS or operational controls

Carbon and Energy Saving

Overview

  • To lead programmes of carbon/energy saving in order to reduce costs and protect the global environment.
  • To improve carbon/energy management practices.
  • Trend EMS Maintenance

Service Provision from Estates & Facilities Department

  • Maintain key policies:- Carbon Management, Air Conditioning, Comfort Heating, Portable electric heaters
  • Procure utilities for the University (prepare, issue and evaluate tenders).
  • Maintain a five year carbon savings plan.
  • Collate and process utility invoices.
  • Invoice validation and resolve disputed invoices.
  • Collate site meter readings and consumption data.
  • Investigate consumption anomalies as necessary.
  • Maintain an annual carbon footprint.
  • Maintain a schedule of combustion equipment (as defined by the Emissions Trading Scheme).
  • Benchmark the energy performance of buildings.

Responsibilities of Users

  • Minimise energy use in activities and operations (turn off lights, monitors, close windows).
  • Fee payable for out-of-hours operation.
  • Ensure energy and water consuming equipment is run in an efficient manner within your Academic Faculty or Department.
  • Consult with the Estates Department prior to purchasing equipment which consumes significant amounts of energy and water.
  • Accept ownership of energy and water consumptions within your Academic Faculty or Department.
  • Treat your place of work as you would your own home.

Water Saving

Overview

  • To lead programmes of water minimisation in order to reduce costs and protect the local environment.
  • To improve water management practices.

Biodiversity Enhancement

Overview

To contribute to the conservation and enhancement of wildlife (flora and fauna) through the development of Biodiversity Action Plans for our landholdings.

Service Provision from Estates & Facilities Department

  • Identify the priority habitats and species of plants, shrubs, trees, invertebrates, birds and mammals that exist on our sites
  • Implement actions to protect and enhance biodiversity and to minimise the impacts of grounds maintenance activities.
  • Implement biodiversity action plans for our campus.
  • Develop indicators to monitor and report biodiversity performance.

Responsibilities of Users

  • Respect grounds, wildlife and planting of flowers/shrubs.
  • Do not drop litter.
  • Keep off or out of areas designated nature zones.

Waste reduction, recovery, recycling and disposal

Overview

  • Lead improvements to waste management practices and develop programmes of waste minimisation to reduce costs and protect the environment.

Service Provision from Estates & Facilities Department

  • Implement measures to discourage litter.
  • Provide recycling facilities throughout academic buildings.
  • Maintain 'on-the-go' recycling facilities across the University campus.

  • Minimise waste
  • Recycle waste.

Travel Planning

Overview

  • Lead initiatives which offer our staff, students and visitors a better choice in the way to travel to work and study at the University.

Service Provision from Estates & Facilities Department

  • Maintain a five year travel plan.
  • Maintain an up-to-date travel guide.
  • Install and maintain cycle parking facilities.
  • Administer the dissemination of environment levy money for travel projects.
  • Conduct an annual commuter travel survey to identify key performance indicators.
  • Liaise with key partner organisations for the mutual benefit of all (Bradford MDC, West Yorkshire Metro).
