The University of Bradford first entered the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in 2006, initially entering the School of Management Site which was awarded a bronze medal. In the two years that followed 2007/8 we received the silver medal for the School of Management site. We did not enter the competition in 2008/9 due to extensive building works being carried out on site which had a major impact on the grounds.
We decided in 2010/11 to enter both City Campus and School of Management sites for the first time, with the belief that the entry would give us a guideline for future grounds planning and received a Silver gilt award. In 2011/12 we decided to again enter both sites and learn from the advice given, which was to produce a portfolio with a selection of the memorable moments that capture the changing seasons and our achievements throughout the year.
We believed that we could create a better area for staff, students and the local community. In 2012/13 we gained the Gold award and Chairman's award for both sites this was followed up in 2013 with a second gold award. In 2014 we again achieved gold award, overall category award and environmental quality award.
This was our third consecutive gold award and demonstrates the ongoing commitment to the grounds by the grounds team. At present both sites are run by a team of five in house gardeners. We encourage staff, students, the local community and schools to get involved and reap the rewards of our produce.
Funding for the maintenance of the grounds is provided through Estates and Facilities’ annual budget. This year we have mentored a local primary school and entered them into this year’s Yorkshire in Bloom.
