Meet the Ground team


Richard Cook: Head Gardener

Richard is the ground maintenance manager responsible for the main campus, school of management and Laisteridge lane. He came to the University in December 1991 having previously been with Halifax Parks Department for 14 years.

He also plans the work, the planting and designs according to season and carries out administration duties. He has been trained in horticulture, fine turf, tree safety, chainsaw work etc.


Robert Ideson: Gardener/litter picker

Robert came to the University in August 1999. As part of his duties he can often be seen driving the dumper in which he has trained. Robert also has an NVQ2.

David Walker: Gardener

David joined the University in February 1996. He deputises for Richard in his absence. He often uses the ride-on mowers and tractor and is involved in the servicing and repair of the machinery.

He has trained in tractor driving, use of chainsaws and pesticide application etc.


Peter Winn - Gardener/litter picker

Peter joined the ground team in April 2007 having previously worked as a Porter at the University. Peter has also been supervising students and visitors who visits our grounds.

He has a BTEC Diploma in Horticulture



Paul Roper: Gardener

Paul has been at the University since November 1993 having previously been a nurseryman in Bradford.  He is very skilled in plant identification.

He also has skills in pesticide application, use of chainsaws among others.

Colin is also a gardener who has been working on the university grounds a while now.
