Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that has been a popular building material since the 1950s. It has been used as an insulator (to keep in heat and keep out cold), has good fire protection properties and protects against corrosion.
Asbestos is often mixed with another material and the resulting mixture is generally termed 'asbestos containing material' or 'ACM'.

If you discover damaged material which you suspect to be asbestos containing material, cordon the area to prevent asbestos exposure and report the damage immediately to the Estates and Facilities Helpdesk on extension 3001 or Security outside normal hours on extension 6999.
