Julia qualified as a Nurse in 1979 and worked almost two years as a nurse on Renal and Respiratory Medical Ward and General Surgical ward before commencing midwifery training.

On qualification Julia worked in Zambia in a rural teaching hospital with a year on nights as matron and then a year in charge of the Maternity Unit. Julia then returned to Sheffield and took up a midwifery post before becoming an F and then G grade Midwife in the antenatal clinic. During her time there she developed a multi-disciplinary team midwifery approach to the antenatal care, a service for expectant teenage mothers and developed a range of antenatal class provision.

After five years Julia left to complete her two year full time teaching degree. Her first teaching post was at St Martin's in Lancaster with the remit to develop a three year curricula to match the Nursing programme. It was here that she became interested in Problem Based Learning (PBL) and continued with the development of that teaching and learning strategy when she moved to Bradford.

In 2000 the Midwifery department at Bradford introduced a full PBL curriculum. From 2009 to 2012 Julia taught reproductive sexual health alongside Undergraduate and Postgraduate Midwifery.

For the last twelve years Julia has worked in partnership with Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust on a unique programme of Advanced Practice for Nurse Hysteroscopist.

In 2011 Julia was made Honorary Fellow of the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) and was also the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning at the University before returning to be Head of Division and Lead Midwife Educator.
