Software Availability and Support Levels

To assist you in choosing and using the most suitable software for your purpose, we have classified publicly available software according to two criteria - Software and Support. Some software may have a high number under Software but a low one under Support - this usually applies to software requested by a department.

Licence definitions

  • DS - Access to data needed from data steward.
  • Chest - Chest Software Agreements and Offers.
  • FW - Freeware.
  • Ind - Licence must be purchased for every PC.
  • Loc - Locally written software.
  • MCA - Microsoft Campus Agreement.
  • PD - Public Domain.
  • Res - Restricted site licence - check with IT Services.
  • Site - Site Licenced.
  • SW - Shareware.

Software level definitions

Refers to the status and availability of the software.

Level 1

  • Highly recommended for all users.
  • Available on all suitable public or staff machines.
  • Upgrades guaranteed.
  • Includes site-licensed / public domain software, CHEST deals.
  • Software may be on sale at the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk.

Level 2

  • May be available on public machines; limited access.
  • Available for staff PCs on request.
  • Includes locally written software.
  • May be available at the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk.

Level 3

  • May be available at the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk as one-off deal.
  • May be discontinued.
  • IT Services recommendation should be sought.

Level 4

  • If available may be removed at short notice.
  • Unlikely to be upgraded or have faults corrected.
  • Use not recommended.

 

Support level definitions

Level 1

  • Help from IT Servicedesk with simple queries.
  • Specialist support available.
  • Full documentation.
  • Courses on particular aspects.

Level 2

  • Help from IT Servicedesk with simple queries.
  • Specialist support available.
  • Some documentation.

Level 3

  • Minimal documentation.
  • Specialist help from outside Information Services; expect delay.

Level 4

  • Not recommended.
  • No advice or documentation.

+  Support will increase as Information Services staff become more familiar with package.
-   Product replaced; level of support will be reduced.
